Anna Farrell
With a background in scientific research and visual communications, I use design to make information more understandable and to inspire action.
I started my career waist-deep in freezing mudflats, plucking eelgrass and collecting water samples. I loved the science, but what really drew me in was creating visuals that made our work understandable.
I learned to listen, iterate, and co-design with users while coordinating a multi-year water quality project, developing materials to teach students about data and to help community members understand if their drinking water was safe to drink.
A certificate in graphic and web design allowed me to craft visually captivating data-driven stories at a biomedical research lab, where I gained experience in art direction, video editing, and communication strategy.
These experiences made me realize that environmental, social, and economic sustainability changes require radical shifts in how our systems work, and pursing this thread brought me to Aalto University in Finland.
While earning on my master’s in Creative Sustainability / Design, I developed skills for designing sustainable transitions, including frameworks in futures studies, systems thinking, sustainable business management, circular economy, and international collaboration. I worked on projects ranging from roadmapping future EU sustainability regulations to developing a business plan for a furniture rental service to my thesis studying how sustainability influencers on social media drive behavior change.
I’m currently based in Helsinki, Finland. When I’m not at my desk, you might find me experimenting with interior design, walking my dog by the sea, or working on my children’s book. You might be surprised to learn that I’ve lived on two different islands and that I once spent three months sailing on a brigantine in the Pacific Ocean.
